Lesson 2. The USB-DMX adapter

Today we take the light out to real fixtures. You need three things: a USB-DMX adapter (the “dongle”), DMX cables and the fixtures themselves.

Step 1. How it works physically

The signal leaves the computer through the adapter in the USB port. A DMX cable runs from the adapter to the first fixture, from the first to the second, then on to the third: fixtures are linked in a chain, like fairy lights. Every fixture has an input (IN) and an output (OUT) — the input faces the computer.

Those very 512 channels from the first lesson travel down this chain.

Step 2. Connecting the adapter

  1. Plug the adapter into a USB port.
  2. In the program press the “DMX” button in the header — the “Detected devices” panel opens.
  3. Pick your adapter and press “Connect” — the status lights up.
  4. If this is the adapter you always use, tick “Connect to this device when the program starts”. Next time the light will be live straight away, with no trip to the panel.
💡 Tip: list empty (“No USB devices found”)? Nine times out of ten it is the driver. Once the driver is installed, reopen the DMX panel.
💡 Peace of mind: if the adapter gets yanked out during a show, the program shows “Reconnecting…” and restores the link by itself the moment the dongle is back in the port. No restart needed.
💡 And if there are a great many fixtures? One USB adapter carries one universe — 512 channels. When that is not enough (a large club, an installation) or the fixtures connect over the network, SvetoMaster can send light over Art-Net and sACN — straight across the local network, several universes at once. That is the subject of a separate lesson for advanced users; for your first events a USB dongle is more than enough.

Step 3. Addresses — the thing that matters most

Remember from the first lesson: the address is the fixture’s seat number on the line. It must match in two places: in the program and on the fixture itself.

  • In the program the addresses live in Patch.
  • On the fixture the address is set on its own little panel (the small display with buttons on the back).

The logic is simple:

PAR 1 — address 1 set 1
PAR 2 — address 7 set 7
PAR 3 — address 200 set 200

It works the other way round too: the addresses are already set on the fixtures — then type them into Patch. All that matters is that they match.

💡 Tip: on many fixtures the address is shown with an “A” or a “d” in front of the number (A001, d007). An older fixture with DIP switches? Its manual has a table telling you which switches to flip up.
⚠️ Careful: make sure the fixture runs in the same channel mode as the profile in the program (6-channel, for example). The fixture’s mode is in its own menu; the profile’s mode is in the fixture settings in Patch.

Step 4. Checking through the Console

The best tool for a first check is the Console mode (the “Cons” button in the header): every channel as a fader.

  1. Raise the fader of channel 1 — the first PAR should smoothly come up in brightness.
  2. Raise the red channel — the fixture turns red.
  3. Responding? Then work your way through the rest of the fixtures.

Not responding — the three most common reasons:

Step 5. The moment of truth

Fire up your “Red” scene from the first lesson — the real PAR (or PARs) floods red. Start the chase — the light is running.

Everything you build on screen will work on the hardware exactly the same: the program draws no distinction between the visualizer and real light — it sends the very same commands down the cable.

💡 Pre-show checklist (five minutes of calm): adapter connected and the status lit → every fixture answers from the Console → the scenes look the way you meant them to.

Let’s sum up

Today we:

  • built the DMX chain: adapter → cables → fixtures daisy-chained;
  • connected the adapter in the program;
  • set the addresses on the fixtures to match Patch;
  • checked every fixture through the Console;
  • saw the light for real.
